The Obelisk on Ballard Down. Originally a gas lamp standard from the City of London,
it was set up in 1892 to mark the provision of Swanage’s first municipal water supply
Note the 'City of London' on the gate post. Old street furniture like this was sent in ships as ballast from London while collecting cargoes of Purbeck Stone in the 19th century, and can be found all around the area.
